About me: I was accepted in the McNair Scholar Program in summer 07’; I began my research topic on developing resilience in children with alcoholic parents. My mentor for this project was Dr. David Bruno from the Social Work Program at the University of North Dakota.  The research consisted of finding existing literature, reading material, and attending a conference in Lynwood, WA. I met with Dr. Al Siebert, Director of the Resiliency Center, at the Washington conference. Siebert’s book, The Resiliency Advantage, is very helpful in exploring the topic of resilience. I compiled my research to date and presented it on a poster in March 2007. The McNair Program has been a great experience for me; I would recommend the program to others who were interested in higher education.

ABSTRACT
Children of Alcoholic Parents and Resiliency

The purpose of this study is to better understand the impact of parental alcoholism, and how resilience can help children overcome the devastation and neglect, that alcoholism brings to the family system. Children exposed to parental substance abuse, face profound challenges, including increased risk for emotional and behavioral problems, substance abuse, and victimization. Research shows that teachers and service providers can help children find supportive and preventive services to learn how to help themselves and build skills to avoid problems later in life, and discover how children from alcoholic environments can utilize resilience to overcome family dysfunction.
